Our last day in China

Today was another special day here in China. We were bused to the American Consulate in Guangzhou where we took an Oath so that we could receive Fu Mei's visa to travel to the United States. No pictures or video but it will always be in my memories. It was more emotional than I thought it would be and I was beginning to become proud to bring her home to America. There were many other families with us and a few of them were singled out and honored because this was their second adoption from China. Hats off to them, that is unimaginable to me!

I was talking to another wonderful family and they felt as strongly as I do that when you visit China and see how some of their people live and what their future entails, especially those that have their start in an orphanage, we feel that bringing them to the US, with its endless opportunities is a very powerful feeling. Our guide explained that for the most part, children in the orphanages who do not get adopted have two options in life. They may stay at the orphanage as a nanny caring for the other children or they may leave the orphanage for life on the streets and a job at a factory working long hours everyday for pennies. Knowing this helps me come to terms with bringing Fu Mei home with us. Thank you Andy and Susie for helping me feel better about all this.

I will miss China. I may not be back anytime soon, but it will always be in my heart, exactly where Fu Mei has lived for so long!
